Innovative research to improve cost-effectiveness in the solar industry

The Quartz Corp secures 9 million in funding from the Research Council for the innovative SolCru project
The project SolCru represents a new formulation and method for material doping of high-purity quartz sand aimed at enhancing viscosity and thermal stability.
This initiative focuses on developing advanced quartz formulations to improve the lifespan of crucibles used in the solar industry.

“The goal is to optimize processes for sustainability and productivity in the solar industry. By improving the lifespan of the crucibles, the production of silicon wafers will become more effective and cost-efficient" says Christian Hadley R&D Manager in The Quartz Corp.

Addressing industry challenges
Crucibles, essential components in growing ingots for silicon wafers, face a significant challenge due to their limited lifespan. The SolCru project seeks to identify a technique that increases the viscosity and thermal stability of quartz without introducing impurities that could degrade silicon wafers.
By developing accurate simulation models to predict the behavior of treated quartz glass when melted, The Quartz Corp will optimize both the treatment and the formulation of quartz crucibles.

Expanding the use of solar energy
The SolCru project will make solar power production more cost-efficient by extending crucible longevity and reducing downtime, thereby supporting the global transition to clean energy. Technological advancements in quartz materials will also improve production efficiency, contributing to sustainability goals.

Beyond the solar sector, the project's innovations hold the potential to benefit other industries, including fiber optics and medical applications, advancing knowledge and capabilities in material science.

The SolCru project will be carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Materials Technology NTNU and SINTEF Industry.
